Bear initially dives down in its pool to examine the child sitting on the floor
But it soon opens its mouth and heads straight for the infant
The crowds laugh but the startled baby quickly reaches out for its mother
Clearly this tiny baby was just the snack this hungry polar bear was after.
In an amazing video a bear can be seen instinctively attacking a baby in a Missouri zoo – but mercifully the tot is on the other side of the glass.
At first the polar bear at St. Louis Zoo appears to just be diving down in his pool to make friends with the little child who is sitting on the floor in front of the tank surrounded by its family.
The delighted baby puts its hand against the glass as though to reach out for the enormous fluffy animal as the relatives coo and laugh over the adorable sight.
The bear surfaces for air before returning to the minute visitor, making a comical sliding noise as it slips down the glass.
But the carnivore soon opens its mouth wide as it approaches the baby, its sharp teeth clearly on display.
The gathered crowds laugh but the infant’s mother is quick to sweep her frightened baby up as it reaches out for her.
‘He tried to take a bite,’ one man can be heard joking.
The bear simply returns to the surface to look area his enclosure nonchalantly while the baby lets out a a few wails.
‘He just wants to play,’ the mother says to her offspring but the little one is quick to turn away from the bear when it reappears.
Such high levels of activities are unusual in polar bears on a hot summer day.
This particular polar bear – weighing over 1,200lbs – is somewhat famous already after it was relocated to the St. Louis zoo last year and had to be quarantined for 30 days – his exposure to the public was much anticipated and marketed.
