Choosing childcare for your children is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make. A nanny is a great choice, since a nanny is someone that you hand pick to care for your children, often in your own home, and who will follow your own rules. This can make a nanny a great choice for many people. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right nanny for your family.

Tip #1: Decide What You Need

First of all you need to make sure you know what your needs are and what your expectations will be. Sit down with your significant other and put it all in writing. Do you need a part time nanny? Full time? One who will live with you? Will there be cooking and cleaning duties involved? Will they need a vehicle? Do your children have any special needs? Will your nanny be responsible for caring for pets? There are so many important things to consider, so get them all in writing before hand. That way both you and your potential nanny can know what your expectations are.

Tip #2: Know Where To Look

While you will find a ton of potential nannies on websites such as Craigslist, you might want to consider hiring one from a professional agencies like Nannies 4 Hire or Sitter City. Agencies are a great resource for parents and can take much of the stress of hiring a nanny off of you. Agencies can find the nannies for you, do the background check, check their references and credentials, and hand it all to you in one nice little packet. Doesn’t that sound nice?

Tip #3: Personality Test

When you are doing your interview face to face with your potential nanny, you have to go with your gut. Do you click with the nanny? How does she interact with your kids? Is she someone you could trust? Do you think she could handle an emergency? Another thing? Trust your kids. Even if you like the nanny, if they don’t click with her, don’t hire her. You would be surprised at how much of a great judge of character kids are!
