The brain is the body’s central processing unit. And just as the CPU of a computer though the most important part, still depends on various minor components to functions well because if not, it shuts down. The brain too works in similar ways. Although it is the main organ in your physiology that coordinates the way you function, it still needs to be in perfect health and the only way to do that is to look after your entire body.

According to world health body WHO, there are ten ways to damage your brain through poor habits of lifestyle and nutrition. Here they are.

1 Skipping Breakfast

Skipping breakfast even if you’re on a weight loss routine is the most dangerous thing you can do. After a long interval of fasting after dinner from the previous night, the body needs to be replenished with electrolytes and nutrients which influence the transport of oxygen to the brain. Thus you are depriving your brain of vital nourishment which will lead to degeneration of the brain.


2 Sleep Deprivation

This is one of the worst things you can do to your entire body let alone your brain. You need no less than 7 to 8 hours of healthy sleep to regenerate your body cells and tissues. Brain cells especially need rest after a prolonged period of work.

3 Excess Sugar intake

Sugar is one of the most dangerous ingredients known to man. Excess sugar by way of processed foods and fruit juices, carbonated beverages, sweets and cakes can impact the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients. This can result in malnourishment, obesity, poor brain function and poor health. Avoiding as much sugar as possible is the best thing you can do to your body.

4 Overeating

Overeating as you all know leads to obesity, lethargy, lack of energy and poor bran nourishment. This results in poor mental function as well as poor focus and concentration.


5 Smoking

It’s never too late to give up one of the most dangerous of lifestyle habits known to man. Because of the damage to lungs, oxygen transport throughout the body including the brain is hindered and laced with toxins. Smoking can ultimately lead to Alzheimer’s, dementia and shrinking of brain tissues.

6 Covering your Head While Sleeping

This of course seems a bit weird as many of us have the habit of covering our heads while sleeping. But!! This is a very bad habit and one of the common ways to damage your brain. This prevents the body from inhaling pure oxygen while sleeping. Instead of oxygen you inhale more carbon dioxide because that too is being trapped within the sheet.


7 Air Pollution

Pollution prevents a pure supply of oxygen to the brain for healthy cognitive function. It is advisable in this day and age to wear a pollution mask while travelling.

8 Working Your Brain when Ill

This is a pretty dangerous thing to do because being sick is your bodys way of telling you “please rest” that’s because your immune system is on overtime trying to fight out the infection, you working won’t do that any good. It damages your health and impedes your brain which has to work extra hard.


9 No communication with people

Speaking and communication helps a person to develop their mental faculties and contributes to the intellectual growth of the brain. Being a loner shouldn’t stop you from conversing with friends and family at least.

10 Lack of Stimulated thinking

Exercising your brain is good for you. Remaining indifferent to every situation in life and not thinking nor trying to work out solutions for you is bad for mental development. Ponder over something, think on a topic, stimulate your brain to open up new means of intellectual activity in your brain or else as they say it will rust.

Not utilizing your brain is one of the easiest ways to damage your brain because the more you use it the more it grows.

    Wow, I learn something new everyday. I will definitely cut down on a few of these things that I hardly knew could effect my brain. As often as I do these things you would think that my brain cells will be burned out by now. Lol

    Good article! Man! I intentionally cut my sleep short just to get up at 4:00 am to go to them gym! It hasn’t affected me yet but I’m sure getting four hours of sleep every night might not be a good thing in the long run.

    This has really helped me because for one i was ready to seek a doctor in regards to why i forget things and my memory isnt as great and as i read this article i coypdnt help but notice i fell in almost every category from no breakfast not enough sleep covering face smokin eating etc….so before iseek a doctor imma try to work on these things first and see if it helps
