A young schoolgirl desperately tried – and failed – to catch a toddler as he fell from the window of his second-floor home and crashed into the ground below.

The two-year-old crashed into bikes below the window, but amazingly survived with only minor scratches.

The shocking accident took place in the city of Xingyang, in the Henan Province, Central China , at about 7.30am local time.

Chen Keyu, a pupil from the city’s Third Elementary School, was one of several dozen who passed by the alleyway where the accident happened and tried desperately to catch the tot.

CCTV footage shows several witnesses watching the tot as he begins to climb out of his window.

The child is said to have been left unattended as he made his way onto the windowsill of his second-floor home and out of the open window.

But only the schoolgirl tries to help as she notices the boy losing his balance.

The clip, later shared by local authorities, shows Chen running towards a row of parked electric bikes as the boy tumbles down.

But she fails to reach him in time and the tot slams onto one of the vehicles, bouncing off the ground.

The schoolgirl picks him up and is quickly surrounded by several dozen residents, who were relieved to find the boy crying but seemingly unharmed.

Another woman took the tot from the schoolgirl after the incident, which took place at 7:20am local time, and the child was taken to hospital where doctors checked him over and discharged him later the same morning.

Reports did not say whether local authorities will charge the boy’s family with negligence.
