The baby would have been alive if she had just given her one bottle.

Couple Jillian and Jarod Johnson had their son Landon five years ago, but lost him a few days after being born. Despite being born healthy, Landon was starved to death and died of dehydration. So how did this happen? Mum Jillian wants to share their heart-breaking story to raise awareness.

Landon weighed a healthy 3.3kg at birth, but was put under heavy medication because of the emergency c-section. Still, Landon was healthy, and the couple was ecstatic to take him home. Jillian was told by doctors to exclusively breastfeed the baby since it was the best for him.

She explains: “Unless you’d had a breast augmentation or cancer or some serious medical reason as to why you couldn’t breastfeed, your baby would not be given formula unless a prescription was written by the pediatrician.”

But then Jillian noticed that Landon would suckle on her breast for hours and still cries most of the time.

She added: “When I asked them (nurses) why he was always on my breast, I was told it was because he was ‘cluster feeding’.

“I recalled learning all about that in the classes I had taken, and being a first time mom, I trusted my doctors and nurses to help me through this – even more so since I was pretty heavily medicated from my emergency c-section and this was my first baby.

“But I was wrong. I’ve learned I have to be my child’s number one advocate.”

On his third day, the mother and son were discharged and were finally allowed to go home. The couple noticed that Landon had lost 9.7% of his body weight, but Jillian was given no instruction to supplement her breastfeeding with formula.

Little did the Johnsons know that barely 12 hours later, Landon would go into cardiac arrest caused by dehydration.

Tragically, Landon died after 15 days of being on life support, where he was found to have suffered “wide-spread brain injury” due to low blood pressure from dehydration and cardiac arrest.

Apparently, Jillian had no idea that her baby was starving because she wasn’t producing enough milk, if at all.

Wrote Jillian: “The best advice I was given by one of his NICU doctors while he was on life support is sure breast is best, but follow with the bottle.

“This way you know your baby has eaten enough….if only I could go back in time.”

“We hope that by spreading the knowledge we’ve learned that we can help prevent any other family from losing their child to something that is 100 per cent preventable.”

My foot! This story is just fearmongering and nothing else. All medical professionals are well versed with the signs of dehydration in a baby and the parents must be informed of the same. The warning signs of dehydration in babies are very very specific – pee and poop count, skin turgidity, fontanelles, inner oral mucosa.

Either this is a fake story or the couple had pathetic medical care.
