21-year-old Charlotte Szakacs, and her husband, 28-year-old Attila Szakacs, were both excited to finally have a complete family after Charlotte gave birth to their daughter. Unfortunately, the baby had a chromosome abnormality and died soon after. Traumatized by the sudden death of their baby, Charlotte wanted to do something extraordinary to help her grieve and heal emotionally.

Doctors told the couple that their daughter—whom they named Evlyn—couldn’t be saved, and that they had to make a difficult decision: they could watch their baby die in the hospital surrounded by machines, or they could spend time with her in a hospice where she can die in peace.

They spent 12 days with her at a hospice and four days at home before the funeral.

Charlotte said: ‘So many people have never heard of parents being able to spend that time with their babies and other moms reached out to me saying they think it would have helped so I really want to raise awareness.

‘I know it might not be the best option for everyone but for us it was so important to be able to have that family time–and just properly cuddle our little girl.’

What is a chromosome abnormality?

A chromosome disorder results from a change in the number or structure of chromosomes. The most severe chromosome disorders are caused by the loss or gain of whole chromosomes, which can affect hundreds, or even thousands, of genes and are usually fatal. Down’s syndrome is the most common abnormality wherein people affected survive.
