A baby weighing slightly more than 1lb has become the smallest in the world to undergo successful heart surgery.

Born at just 28 weeks in a hospital in Udaipur, western India, the little baby has not yet been given a name.

He is too fragile to touch, his eyes have not opened, his lungs are not yet developed and his skin looks like it is made from parchment paper.

But a team of doctors from the Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital and Jeevanta Hospital had to perform risky surgery to separate his aorta and pulmonary artery, two major blood vessels of the heart which were stuck together.

Dr Sunil Jangid, chief neonatologist and paediatric intensivist, said: ‘Normally the connection between the arteries remains till the foetus is in mother’s womb.

‘It automatically disconnects after childbirth. If it doesn’t, it has to be treated with medicines.

‘In this case, when the infant didn’t respond to medicines, heart surgery was the last option.’

Doctors looking after the baby said surgery was an uphill task, as almost all his body parts are so weak.

‘The baby weighed merely 470 grams at birth and was just the size of a palm. Operating on an infant, especially when he is so tiny, is very challenging and risky as the body parts are extremely premature,’ said cardiovascular surgeon Dr Sanjay Gandhi.

He added: ‘The baby weighed merely 470 grams at birth and was just the size of a palm.

The baby was so small that doctors decided it would safer to operate in NICU (neonatal intensive care unit).

Moving him to another theatre could have killed him.

Tiny surgical instruments were used during the procedure and everyone was thrilled that the baby survived against all odds.

S P Jain and his wife, both from Udaipur, conceived the baby with the assistance of IVF.

The new parents, who are yet to decide a name for their son, say his survival is nothing short of a miracle.

Mr Jain said: ‘He is so brave that he has survived so many odds with such low weight. Our prayers have been answered.’
