When Charlotte, a 14-year-old teen from Michigan, was 3 months old, the family pet raccoon, that was out of its cage bit off nearly half her face! She lost her nose, right ear, some of her right cheek and upper lip. It was presumed that the raccoon attacked because Charlotte had milk spilled on her face from a bottle propped in her mouth.

This tragic event wound up in her birth parents losing custody of her. She was adopted by her great aunt and uncle, Sharon and Tim Ponce, who left no table unturned to help Charlotte get her life back.

Ponce said, “When Charlotte was taken to the hospital they didn’t know what to do with her, or how to save her face.” She spent two months in the hospital.

Charlotte underwent her first surgery when she was only two years old. Since then she has had at least 12 more surgeries.

“When Charlotte was eight we were referred to another hospital where she received a prosthetic nose and ear, but they didn’t last. We struggled to find anyone that would help and so I took matters into my own hands. I came across Dr. Chaiyasate online and we instantly knew he was the doctor for Charlotte, he cared for her like she was his own,” said Ponce.

The operating plastic surgeon, Dr. Koongkirt Chaiyaste, said, “She’s never cried. With every surgery, she’s never complained.”

Some procedures involved using rib cartilage and skin from other areas of her body to build a nose.

In 2014, when she was only 11, Charlotte underwent very complex reconstructive surgery. To rebuild the ear, cartilage from her ribs was removed and implanted in her arm to form a “C” shape, using computer-based technology. This was allowed to grow in her arm for three months and was used to replace the right ear she had lost.

“After her last surgery in 2014, Charlotte was hoping that she would be able to wear earrings as Dr. Chaiyasate had used a tiny piece of tubing to fashion an earring in her right earlobe – but that eventually tore,” said Sharon.

Charlotte underwent an operation recently on June 15 that would finally allow her to get her ears pierced. She already has 50 pairs of earrings she has been waiting to wear! “We were told from day one that she would never be able to get a new ear, so to finally have one means everything to Charlotte.”

Charlotte wants to pursue biomedical engineering in the future and build prosthetics for people.

Ponce maintains a Facebook page called “Friends of Charlotte Rose” to update well-wishers and those interested in Charlotte’s progress.
