The power of touch cannot be underestimated. Just ask twin sisters Brielle and Kyrie, of whom Brielle owes her life to it.

Twenty-two years ago, Brielle and Kyrie came into the world 12 weeks premature, and they weighed a mere one kilogram (2.2lb) each. They were placed in separate incubators, and while Kyrie thrived and gained weight, things weren’t so promising for tiny Brielle. She constantly screamed, and had turned blue in the face due to a lack of oxygen.

Brielle’s condition quickly deteriorated over a few days and became critical. ICU nurse Gayle Kasparian was desperately trying to help the tiny tot, but nothing was having any effect. Gayle had cuddled Brielle, wrapped her in a blanket, and asked the twins’ father to hold her, but there was no improvement in her condition.

Recalling the skin-to-skin technique, or kangaroo method, she had heard about in Europe, Gayle placed the twins in the same incubator, and everyone witnessed a miracle.

Brielle cuddled close to her twin, the incessant crying ceased, her heart rate dropped back to normal, and her oxygen levels normalized. Over the next few weeks, she started to thrive and put on weight, as long as she stayed close to Kyrie.

Photographer Chris Christo of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette was at the hospital when the twins were placed together, and he snapped a photo of the twins, which became known as the “lifesaving hug.” It went viral on the internet, and was featured on the cover of Life and Reader’s Digest.

Parents Heidi and Paul Jackson had to change their phone number, as worldwide interest in the twins was so intense. The photo of the tiny twins’ hug in the incubator appeared in newspapers and magazines worldwide.

“They get along really, really well, and they’re each other’s best friends,” said dad Paul.
