This is a heart-breaking story behind the viral photo of a twin baby hugging his sick sibling in incubator, just a day before his critical surgery.

Twin brothers, Hawk and Mason Buchmeyer, were born prematurely on Aug. 18, 2016, to proud parents Tommy and Brandy at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital, in Gainesville.

Right after birth, Hawk was diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a rare condition where the diaphragm does not fully develop, affecting the growth of lungs. Hawk was scheduled for the delicate surgery on Aug. 30, 2016.

But just a day before Hawk’s surgery, parents and nurses noticed that Mason was behaving a bit “strange.” So one of the nurses decided to lay Mason next to Hawk.

The moment the twin baby brothers came closer, Mason put his arm around Hawk as if bidding him the last goodbye.

“So we laid him there and all of the sudden as soon as he felt Hawk, he reached his arm out and grabbed him and just started to smile. The two of them knew they were there for each other,” Brandy told CBS12.

On Sept. 2, Tommy and Brandy posted this touching moment on the “Mason & Hawk” Facebook page that they had created to keep the family and friends informed about the twins’ progress.

The post read: “This picture was taken a 11 days after they were born, it’s the first time they have ever touched and as soon as Mason felt Hawk he reached out for his arm and smiled this big. We thought it was time for everyone pulling for our boy to see this picture.”

Everyone was so touched by Mason’s loving gesture, but little did they know that it was the first and last time Mason would be able to hug his twin, Hawk.

Sadly, on Sept. 7, just six days after the surgery, their brave angel passed away.

“Our hearts are saddened this morning as our sweet little man was called home to be with Jesus. He went very peacefully and we know he’s no longer suffering,” the grief-stricken parents wrote.

One year later, on Aug. 19, 2017, the parents posted a new photo to remember their little Hawk on his birth anniversary, with his baby brother Mason.

touching5“For some unknown reason God said he needed Hawk more than we did. I have always been told you never questions God’s reasoning an I never have during our whole adventure… Some families walk into the hospital with twins and walk out with neither one, some go in with one and come out alone. I’m thankful for our little blessing and the joy plus strength he brings everyone,” the parents wrote.

This literally made me smile and cry. I happen to lucky enough to have siblings it may not always feel lucky but I know I am lucky to share my life with them forever and couldn’t imagine. But a sibling bond is amazing.

This article was very inspiring. Being a twin myself, I can remember growing up how inseparable we were – now that we are adults, the weekends don’t come fast enough so we can get together and hang out. . I want to encourage the parents of these handsome twins to know that God makes no mistakes and know that Hawk will always love through Mason❤️❤️❤️
