Most expectant mothers dream of holding their baby after months of anticipation. But for this mother, that dream almost didn’t come true when the main vein connecting to her heart ruptured and she almost lost her own life, as well as her baby’s.

When, in February, Danielle Gaither from Charlotte, North Carolina, was 39 weeks pregnant, she developed intense chest pains and was rushed to the hospital.

Danielle, who has Marfan syndrome, which affects the body’s connective tissue, had suffered an aortic dissection—the large blood vessel in her heart had torn, affecting a vital blood line to her organs, as well as to her unborn child. Both their lives were in jeopardy.

Doctors had to act swiftly. They decided to perform two operations simultaneously: open-heart surgery and a Cesarean section.

According to Dr. Jeko Madjarov, the principal cardiothoracic surgeon dealing with Danielle, her odds were very slim, and she had less than a 1 percent chance of survival.

“Danielle’s body was shutting down, and we knew we had to work together to save two lives. The gold standard of treating aortic dissection is circulatory arrest, which is a surgical technique that stops blood circulation,” Dr. Madjarov told Daily Mail Online.

With nearly 20 doctors assisting, the operations took six hours to complete.

Afterward, Danielle spent 111 days recovering in a specialized unit. Four months after the massive operations, doctors gave the nod for her to see and hold her beautiful baby boy, named KV, after his father. Danielle wept with joy and relief.

Dr. Madjarov added: “These surgeries are conventionally performed separately, but we knew there wasn’t enough time. We were also confident that we were going to be successful. So, four teams worked together to save two lives.”

Dr. Joseph T. McGinn, who oversaw the heart surgery that day said, “What amazes me is how our teams worked so well together.”

Danielle, who was born with Marfan syndrome, was aware of her condition, as well as the risks involved in pregnancy. She was already a mother of four children.

Danielle’s OBGYN, Dr. Heather Bane, said that it might not have worked out in Danielle’s favor had she not lived so close to the hospital.

“I’m glad that I’m here and I thank Dr. Madjarov and the team, along with God, for saving my life,” Danielle said.
