Although it looks like a beautiful moment of bonding between parent and infant, lying together, head-to-heart, too few of us may know the dangers of allowing a newborn to sleep this way. One father found this out the hard way.

In 2010, Dr. Sam Hanke, a pediatric cardiologist, took hold of his four-week-old son, Charlie, after his wife finished breastfeeding him. The father soon fell asleep with his son on his chest. Little did he know that this posture was dangerous for the boy.

“I just sat down on the couch to watch some TV and he was kind of sitting on my chest. We were just hanging out and I nodded off. A couple hours later I woke up and Charlie was gone,” he told Fatherly.

Charlie’s death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS or SUIDS) and stories like the Hanke family’s are not uncommon.

“Of the 4,000 babies that die of SUIDS annually, a significant number die on couches or in armchairs. Many perish near dad or under him from due to suffocation. Emergency Room doctors and pediatricians see those tragedies regularly,” Fatherly reported.

After Charlie’s death, Hanke and his wife set up an organization called “Charlie’s Kids” both to honor their son and to educate parents about safety when their babies are sleeping.

“Even in our own hospitals it’s something that we struggle with. There’s certainly a norm to these images that is subtly saying that these types of behaviors are safe and okay,” Hanke said.

“We hope that people will say, ‘Wow, that kid is in an unsafe sleep environment.’ We hope that it’ll become more and more recognized.”
