Hurricane Harvey had left this nine-month-pregnant woman stranded at home, and hence she was preparing herself for a home birth, as floodwaters rose and surrounded her apartment. Fortunately, a truck pulled up outside her front door just in time.

When the apartment that Annie Smith, 32, from Houston, lives in was surrounded by floodwater, she went into labor, and it was impossible for her husband, Greg, to get her to the hospital.

“When I saw all the flooding I turned to Greg and was like, ‘I’m really starting to get scared now.’ It kind of dawned on me that this is it, I’m in actual labor,” she told ABC News.

Both of them are doctors and had moved to Houston to complete medical fellowships—Annie in geriatrics, and Greg in pediatric anesthesiology.

As Annie was preparing herself for a home birth, Greg started preparing the supplies that could be used for the labor with his mom, who was in town, to help with the birth. At least 15 neighbors came to help as well.

“There are a lot of medical trainees in the [apartment] complex so a general surgery resident next door came over and some emergency residents and finally an OB-GYN intern showed up too. People dug through their supplies and brought sutures and scalpels and anything that could be needed,” Greg said.

The couple was unsuccessful in multiple attempts at contacting the police. When they called the Texas National Guard’s emergency number for help, they learned the National Guard wouldn’t get there in time. Finally, Annie called the director of her fellowship program, who got them the help they needed.

“I think it was [the director’s] father who lived near a fire department and he walked to it and told them what was happening,” Greg said. In less than an hour, a truck pulled up outside their front door.

With help from neighbors and firefighters, a human chain was formed to help Annie to the truck as the water was so high.

Recalling the situation, Annie said: “I just kind of held onto them one person at a time and crawled along their arms until the firemen helped me up the ladder onto the truck. I was sitting on a fire hose in the back of the truck with a shower curtain over my head and looking at all the floodwater around us thinking, ‘This is so bizarre.’”

Annie gave birth to the couple’s first child almost 12 hours later, and she is grateful to those who helped her, including their neighbors, firemen, and medical team.

“It was absolutely incredible how many people responded and were out in the rain trying to help us. And the staff has been stranded here since Friday, alternating 12-hour shifts and still giving exceptional care,” she said.
