India being the second most populous country in the world contributes to one-fifth of global live births and various factors like unplanned pregnancy, poor maternal nutrition, consanguineous marriages and more, lead to the infants being born different than others. While some parents simply cannot accept the fact that their child is different there are other who consider it as a miracle!

A few years ago, in the small North Indian village of Saini, a baby born with two faces created a sensation among the villagers. The baby, Lali, was born with an extremely rare congenital disorder called Craniofacial Duplication where a single head has two faces. Except for the ears, all of the baby’s facial features are duplicated – two mouths, two noses and two pairs of eyes.

Conditions like these are often linked to serious health complications but the doctors were surprised that the baby was doing well. The baby had no difficulties breathing, eats with both mouths and opens and closes all her four eyes simultaneously. The poor parents have accepted the baby as she is and has refused to take her to a specialist doctor.

When the news of the child’s birth spread across the village, hundreds of people were seen flocking the little brick house of the parents to catch a glimpse of the child. While some may consider it an oddity, the family sees little to differentiate her from other babies and consider her birth to be some kind of miracle. Whatever the case, it’s heartwarming to know that the couple has accepted the child in spite of her being different.
