In a most bee-zarre maternity photo shoot, this beekeeper woman poses in a meadow like a delicate flower, bees swarming over her round belly, as if in search of some sweet nectar within.

Emily Mueller, 33, is a beekeeper from South Akron, Ohio. As she is expecting her fourth child, she shared the inspiration behind her maternity photo shoot: “Bees have been a huge part of our lives for the past few years so I wanted to incorporate them into something important to me—like my maternity photos.”

Emily and her husband, Ryan, 37, own Mueller Honey Bee Removal. They own 24 hives and tend to 1.2 million bees. Emily has always loved bees and they are an integral part of who she is.

“A lot of people think I’m insane but I’m so comfortable with bees so it was never something I had anxiety about,” she says.

The question is how did they manage to arrange all those bees to all swarm on her belly?

By a stroke of luck, on the morning of the shoot, Emily was called out on a job that needed to have a hive removed from a park. That inspired Emily to use the loose hive for the shoot.

“I had been called to a swarm removal that morning so I fed those bees sugar to make sure they would be content and gentle enough to work with,” she says.

The queen had to be taken out first. Emily removed her from the hive and placed her in a cage in her hand. Emily explained: “… I put the queen bee in a cage and tied it to a branch in a tree in the garden. She is larger and bigger so it was easy to identify her.”

Emily’s husband held the branch with the hive near her. Upon shaking the branch, the bees came swarming out.

Emily described the experience of 20,000 bees on her belly: “Having them all on me was this clinging sensation. They all stick to you and they are very warm, so it’s almost like when a kitten is walking on you.”

Emily stayed calm even though she was stung thrice.

“I wore a dress that was long and covered my stomach and legs so the bees would be on the outside of my body as a cautionary measure, but I knew it was safe,” she said. “The photos were worth it, I love them.”

“Bees represent life and death and they are very spiritual creatures, I have three children and I had three miscarriages so it was in tribute to them all.”

“I just want to raise awareness about how gentle they are,” she added.

Even though she was a professional this was still risky! I wouldn’t have put my unborn child at risk nor myself, but to each its own!
