At 26 years of age, just about three weeks after delivery, this woman suddenly became paralyzed and was unable to care for her newborn child. But luck chose to be on her side and she made one of the most incredible medical recoveries, driven by the love for her baby.

When her baby was born in February 2011, Holly Gerlach was elated. But her jubilation only lasted a few days. Just 20 days after the birth of baby Casey, Gerlach collapsed while trying to feed the child. Her then-husband quickly took her to the hospital, where the doctors had unfortunate news for them.

The doctors informed Gerlach that she was suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder that was probably triggered from the childbirth. Within 72 hours of the initial symptoms, Gerlach was completely paralyzed.

“I was told my case was very severe. I was in a lot of pain, so I was very sedated and my memory is quite hazy.

“I just remember being really scared, and depressed about being away from Casey, who was only 20 days old at the time,” she said, reports MailOnline.

During a blood transfusion, an artery ruptured accidentally. She had to undergo emergency surgery.

Casey was brought in every day to meet her mom.

“It was very hard seeing her and not being able to properly cuddle her or talk to her,” Gerlach said.

It’s GBS AWARENESS MONTH!! This month is an important one to me, as I always try to bring awareness to the disease that nearly took my life 6 years ago after the birth of my daughter. When I was diagnosed with GBS, many of the doctors and nurses I had had never seen a case of GBS before. So what is GBS? It is an autoimmune disorder, where your immune system attacks your nervous system, quickly paralyzing you (usually from the limbs inward). About 30% of patients will require mechanical ventilation to help them breathe (myself included) and majority of patients will need physiotherapy to teach them how to do day to day tasks again. About 5% die from complications. GBS is an acute illness, meaning that once the acute phase is over, you start to recover, but this can take months to years. Some patients don’t ever fully recover and are left using walkers or wheelchairs. So why is this month important? Because rare diseases like GBS and CIDP just don’t get the same amount of media coverage or fundraising that other diseases, like Cancer, get. It may be rare, but people still need resources and support, and there’s not much out there when a disease is rare. Also, early detection is key and getting treatment started can make all the difference in the world. It’s important to listen to your body and go to a doctor if something doesn’t feel right. I went in with a tingly finger and weak legs and was told I had a pinched nerve…72 hours later I was paralyzed in ICU where I spent three months. I was completely healthy before this, and was just 26 years old. I’m grateful to have recovered completely but not everyone is that fortunate. In honor of GBS awareness month I ask that you please watch my video on YouTube (link is in my bio) and see what GBS does to a person. And SHARE it for further GBS awareness!!! If my video inspires you to live your life to the fullest, or motivates you to donate to the GBS foundation, or helps someone else with GBS not feel so alone, then it makes what I went through all worth it. ❤️ https://youtu.be/huN8iIWXNCs #gbs #guillainbarresyndrome #guillainbarresyndromeawareness #gbsawarenessmonth #autoimmunedisease

Fortunately, after six weeks, she started to show signs of recovery. But her movements were slow and not cohesive. She had to struggle to move her fingers, hands, and feet after spending many days lying inactive in the hospital.

It took her three months from the day she was admitted to even start moving her legs again. And in the fourth month, she was discharged from the hospital. She was still very weak; however, by this time, she was able to walk using a cane.

But Gerlach was not one to give up. The drive to hold her baby in her arms once more was enough to keep her going.

Three weeks after being discharged, she was able to walk without using any support!

She started exercising to strengthen her body, and after a few months of rigorous training, she made a full recovery.

“Being hospitalized for so long made me realize just how short life is, and how fortunate we are to do the things that we can do. Being able to walk again has reminded me to get out and do more things, it has shown me how strong I am, and it has made me who I am today,” she states on her website.

She has authored a book, titled “Happily Ever After,” detailing this most challenging part of her life. Seeing how she not only beat her medical condition but came back stronger than ever, she is surely an inspiration!

Holly now lives with her partner and their blended family in Edmonton, Canada.

That’s really admirable! She was in great pain because of the disease, but for her, it was more painful seeing her daughter and unable to hug or cuddle her. That says a lot. Being a mother is never easy, you prioritize your child’s wellness above all. Saluting all Moms!
