Emily Mueller, whose maternity photos showing a swarm of bees on her pregnant belly went viral earlier this year, shared on Facebook her personal story of losing her baby.

Six days before her child was due to enter the world, Emily Mueller learned her baby had passed.

Her doctor’s words and the faces of her husband and three children as she got the news caused an unbearable pain.

Mueller, who was featured in an Independent article in August for maternity photos that went viral, candidly shared the development about her baby boy, Emersyn Jacob, on her Facebook page.

The photo that had many folks talking as it circulated social media sites was taken by Mueller’s friend, Massillon photographer Kendrah Damis. It showed a swarm of honeybees resting on Mueller’s pregnant belly.

The baby’s death was not connected to the honeybees in her maternity photo, said Mueller, whose father was a beekeeper and she now owns a beekeeping business, Mueller Honey Bee.

Emersyn was stillborn at 10:18 p.m. Saturday. Mueller believes a common genetic defect caused the loss of her child — the same condition that caused her to lose three other pregnancies.

Damis said her friend has been strong through this difficult time.

“She’s doing all she can right now to get through this,” said Damis, who visited Mueller Tuesday evening.

Mueller credits Sufficient Grace Ministries, a non-profit organization based in Deshler, Ohio, for helping her and her family grieve the loss.

Kelly Gerken founded the group in 2004 to provide support and resources for families who have lost a child or received a fatal diagnosis. Gerken lost three babies, twin girls in 1996 and a boy in 1998. Years later, a friend of Gerken’s lost a child, and Gerken decided she wanted to create an organization that would aid grieving mothers and their families.

“It was kind of like waking up and realizing what I would have wanted and what would have comforted me,” Gerken said.

Sufficient Grace helps families make the most of their time with their babies and celebrate the life they had through maternity photos, newborn photos, memory books and comfort bears. Gerken said Sufficient Grace walks with the family every step of the way and documents as much as possible.

Mueller said in a FaceBook post that the organization provided two birth doulas who answered her questions and supported her during the stillbirth. All services from Sufficient Grace were free, including footprints on keepsake items, a comfort bear and newborn photography.

“For one day we got to give him all of us and to do important things that mattered,” Mueller wrote in her post. “My heart was able to begin healing from this.”
