Giving birth is not a walk in the park. The labor can be intensive and it can weaken a woman physically. Most women require a few days to recover their strength, but this lady proved she had remarkable resilience.

On Dec. 12, 2017, Hilary Conway, an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB-GYN) at Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic in Washington, gave birth to her second child, Verna Pearson. Conway had been looking forward to her daughter’s birth, but it also meant she would be missing her patients’ deliveries.

“It’s always important for me to help my patients deliver,” Conway told TODAY Parents.

“Honestly, I think it’s harder on us as physicians to miss deliveries than it is for the patient—to miss the delivery is like missing the culmination of everything you have known for nine months and sometimes more,” she added.

A few hours after Conway gave birth, she received a text from Katie Moss, one of her patients, telling Conway that she was in labor.

“Katie was my patient for close to a year before she was my OB patient, and she is someone I easily relate to,” Conway told PEOPLE. “I think we bonded on a number of levels during this time prior to her becoming pregnant. We were close enough that I had given her my cell phone number, which is not something that I give out frequently.”

Much to the surprise of both Conway and Moss, they learned that their hospital rooms were right next door to each other.

“It wasn’t until I was admitted and waiting for the anesthesiologist that one of the nurses told me that they were putting me in the room next door to Dr. Conway! I couldn’t believe my ears!” Moss said.

As soon as Conway finished feeding her newborn, she left her baby in the care of staff, and went next door to help support Moss with the birth of her twins.

“I was hoping to see her maybe the next day but not so soon and so awake. She looked completely normal—unlike she just had a baby half a day earlier,” said Moss.

Moss gave birth to healthy twin boys about 14 hours after Conway gave birth to Verna.

Conway doesn’t believe what she did was remarkable; what’s more noteworthy is the timing.

Conway told TODAY, “This was a delivery I didn’t want to miss, and somehow the stars aligned that she was admitted before I was discharged, she labored quickly so that I could deliver between feeds, and that I had given her my cell phone number. There was a whole lot of serendipity that allowed for this to happen.”

What Conway did went above the call of duty. She didn’t have to go next door to help, but she did so out of the goodness of her heart. Moss is lucky to have a doctor like Conway.
