Amelia Moloney had slept with the eBay earrings in for three nights and had a severe reaction to them

Three-year-old Amelia Moloney was so attached to her gold-plated ladybird studs, it took her mum three nights to persuade her to take them out.

The earrings, which had cost £2.99 from eBay , were a gift for the youngster who loves ladybirds.

When mum Ciara, from Armagh, Northern Ireland, eventually managed to get her to take the earrings out, she was left horrified by the reaction her daughter had had to them.

Normally diligent about removing Amelia’s earrings before bed, on this occasion she’d wanted to keep them in “because they were a present,” Ciara explains.

“She had them in for three days and I was getting her ready for pre-school and when I went to take it out there was a ball of something in my finger,” the mum continues.

Taking out the earrings had left Amelia screaming in pain and with blood coming out of her ear.

“I thought her ear was coming off – it was so scary. There was blood pouring from her ear – it was dripping all over her school uniform.

“She was screaming and saying ‘it hurts’.

“When I took it out the ear swelled up. It was terrible. I took her to the doctors and they told me to take her to the nearest hospital.”

At the hospital, the nurse informed them the infection was so bad, Amelia was lucky to not have lost her ear lobe.

Ciara continues, “The stuff that was coming off was dead tissue. It had got stuck on the earring. It was disgusting.

“The nurse cleaned it up and gave her some anti-biotics which she has to take four times a day.

“She told me it could take a long time to heal and if it doesn’t she would have to be referred to a plastic surgeon.”

The hospital have not been able to say what precisely caused such a bad reaction, but did suggest some people are allergic or just can’t wear cheaper earrings.

Mum-of-five Ciara now wants others “as you would not believe an earring could do that much damage.

She also added the person who bought the gift had complained to the seller on eBay who had offered her a refund.

However the seller had also issued a scathgin response, saying: “They are costume jewellery and £2.99 a pair. Would you let your child wear costume jewellery for three days? Especially a child as young as three years?

“Check on our listing and read the description as all buyers should do before purchasing.

“We are not allowed to list our earrings as real gold or say they have a certain carat of real gold and we clearly state the metal is brass.

“I wouldn’t care how much a three year old liked a pair of earrings, they wouldn’t be sleeping in them for a single night never mind three nights.”
