A Texas inmate says she was forced to give birth to a one pound baby boy on the floor of her prison cell after claiming that guards ignored her cries for help.

25 year old Shaye Bear, was only five months pregnant when she went into labor at Ellis County Jail in Waxahachie, south of Dallas.

Bear was several months pregnant when she was arrested on drug charges for methamphetamines. Failing to post bail, a judge decided she should remain incarcerated for the safety of the baby. She was put in a single cell so guards could keep an eye on her.

The 25-year-old said she was screaming for hours

Bear said that she was screaming for hours but the guards refused to help her because they thought she was faking it. Other inmates at the jail reportedly said Bear was screaming in pain for two days.

‘I delivered a one pound, two ounce baby in that single cell screaming for hours, begging them to come and help me,’ she said.

‘The guards would walk by and tell me they wouldn’t do nothing for me until I had that baby in that cell.’

Bear said she had been in pain for a few days and asked guards to take her to the emergency room because she thought she was suffering from contractions.

After her water broke, Bear said she was on her hands and knees in the cell having contractions when ‘the baby flies out of me and lands on the mat’.

She described her baby – who she named Cashh – as being purple and said guards ‘took a long time’ to finally respond to her cell.

But she claims guards refused to help her because they thought she was faking
Bear, who already was a mother of two, said she knew she had to suck the fluid out of her baby’s mouth and nose with her own mouth while she waited for help.

When guards did eventually respond, Bear said one of them asked if  ‘she had reached inside of herself and pulled the baby out?’

Bear and her child were rushed to a nearby hospital before the newborn was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Forth Worth.

The baby remains in intensive care.

A prison official who didn’t want to be named said investigators believed Bear induced her own labor.

The official said Bear made it no secret to the other inmates that she didn’t want the baby.

Investigations show that Bear did receive medical attention while in jail, she even saw a doctor the morning of the child’s birth. The doctor reportedly thought she had an infection but was not dilated.

She gave birth to her second son 21 months ago in the hospital while she was an inmate at Dallas County Jail. Bear also has an eight-year-old son.
